Judith & Sander’s Story: From Rotterdam to the Namib Desert

For many, 02-02-2022 was a special date to tie the knot. For me, it became the day Judith and Sander first reached out about their dream to elope in Namibia. At first, I didn’t think much of it—I receive many inquiries for photoshoots in unusual and breathtaking places. But the moment I replied, Judith responded right back, and our journey together began. Months of excited emails later, we finally met in person to finalize the plans for their once-in-a-lifetime Namibian elopement photoshoot in Sossusvlei.

Although Judith and Sander officially married in Rotterdam, Holland, in July, they wanted something more than just a traditional wedding day. They had the big celebration, the photos, and the party at home—but their hearts longed for an experience that felt adventurous, wild, and unforgettable. So, they chose to travel across the world to elope in Namibia’s desert landscape, wearing their wedding attire against one of Africa’s most iconic backdrops: the towering red dunes of Sossusvlei.

I couldn’t have been more thrilled. Photographing a couple in Deadvlei and Sossusvlei is every photographer’s dream, and theirs was about to come true. With the help of my friend Charlotte from ATI Holidays, we arranged all the details, and by the time the day arrived, everything fell into place beautifully—even the weather.

That Wednesday morning, we set off for Sossusvlei. The gates at Sesriem only open at 7:45, so after a quick breakfast we started the 60km drive into the park. Along the way, I got to know Judith and Sander more personally. We talked about travel, life, and how the pandemic had reshaped our worlds, all while being surrounded by the vast silence and beauty of Namibia’s desert. Watching the sunrise over the dunes is a moment words can hardly describe—the colors shift so quickly, painting the sand in shades of orange and red that no camera can truly capture.

Once we reached Deadvlei, the real magic began. The ancient camelthorn trees, stark against the cracked white clay pan and fiery dunes, created a surreal stage for their elopement photos. Each angle, each shadow, each step across the sand revealed something new. I’ve photographed here many times, but every shoot feels entirely unique—like the desert itself tells a different story each time.

Looking back at these photos, I’m reminded why couples choose to elope in Namibia. It’s not just about saying vows or taking portraits—it’s about experiencing something raw and unforgettable. Judith and Sander’s elopement wasn’t only a photoshoot; it was a once-in-a-lifetime adventure written in sand and sunlight.

If you’ve ever dreamed of a wedding that feels like an adventure, where the desert becomes your chapel and the dunes your witnesses, then maybe it’s time to elope in Namibia. Imagine walking through Deadvlei in your wedding attire, feeling the warm sand beneath your feet, and letting the beauty of nature write your love story.

If this sounds like your kind of dream, I’d love to help capture it for you. Email me directly at [email protected] to start planning your own unforgettable Namibian elopement.
