An afternoon out with Martin
I recently had a fantastic opportunity to explore the moon landscape and Welwitschia Valley with Charly’s Desert Tour. Over the years, I have seen bits and pieces of the moon-like landscape, but it was wonderful to drive around with a guide and discover more. Charly’s Desert Tours, based in Swakopmund, offer pick-ups in the town. Guests can choose to do the tour in the mornings or afternoons. Although they recommend the morning as it’s cooler, I opted for the afternoon to enjoy the golden light. I now understand that mornings are cooler, especially with easterly winds, but the golden glow was well worth the heat!
The tour lasts about three hours, beginning behind the Swakopmund plot and course through to Goanikontes and back to Swakopmund. Our guide, Martin, shared a wonderful variety of desert plants, explaining their names and medicinal uses. Being Damara, he also tried to teach us a few click sounds, but our tongues remained too stiff! Seeing the Welwitschias so close to Swakopmund was a pleasant surprise, and I hope to spend more time with them in the future. We also enjoyed viewing the moon landscape from the viewpoint as the last golden rays touched the mountain peaks. Absolutely!
