How to elope
in Namibia.

Everything I tell couples on our first call: where to go, when to come, how the legal side works, where to sleep and what to wear.

Six places
to say it.

pick one. or three.

01  Deadvlei & Sossusvlei

Black camelthorn trees on white clay, ringed by some of the highest dunes on earth.

LOCAL NOTESleep inside the park gate. Everyone else waits in the queue at sunrise.

02  Skeleton Coast & Walvis Bay

Fog off the Atlantic, salt pans, and at Sandwich Harbour, dunes that run into the sea.

LOCAL NOTEBook the morning. Most afternoons the wind arrives, and it doesn’t negotiate.

03  Spitzkoppe

Granite domes and a natural rock arch rising out of the plains, under an enormous sky.

LOCAL NOTEStay the night. The arch at last light and the stars are the reason to come.

nobody else in frame

04  Damaraland

Red mountains, rock engravings at Twyfelfontein, desert-adapted elephants in dry riverbeds.

LOCAL NOTEDistances are long and the roads rough. Give it two nights, not one.

05  Etosha & the safari lodges

A ceremony at your lodge, then a game drive in your wedding clothes.

LOCAL NOTEIn game areas we shoot from the vehicle or with a guide. Nobody walks among the lions.

06  NamibRand & private reserves

Fairy circles, balloon flights and dunes where the only footprints are yours.

LOCAL NOTEPrivate land often means more freedom. Ask me which lodges allow it.

May – August

Clear and cold

Clear skies and the best stars of the year. Desert dawns can drop to near freezing, so bring a coat for the walk in. July and August are the busiest months at Sossusvlei.

September – November

Warm and dry

Still dry, with warmer mornings and long golden light, comfortable for a dress at sunrise. Expect more wind, especially in the afternoons.

December – February

Hot and stormy

Midday in the desert goes well past 35°C, so we work at sunrise only. Rain falls mostly in the north and east, with big storm skies.

March – April

After the rain

The last rains, grass on the plains, cooler evenings and fewer people everywhere. An underrated window.

The coast is its own country.

Fog in the morning and wind most afternoons, all year round. Coastal elopements are always booked for the morning.

mornings only!

04 · Getting here

Flights and visas

Windhoek has direct flights from Frankfurt and Munich with Discover Airlines and seasonal flights from Zurich with Edelweiss. Condor returns to Frankfurt–Windhoek from June 2027. From the UK and North America, connect through Europe, Johannesburg, Doha or Addis Ababa. For the coast, fly into Walvis Bay via Johannesburg or Cape Town.

Since April 2025 most European, UK and US passport holders need a visa on arrival. Apply online before you fly, and check the current rules when you book.

05 · 06 · WHERE TO STAY

THE LOCAL’S GUIDE · 2027 SEASON

P. 06

Where you sleep decides your sunrise.

Deadvlei is about 60 km past the park gate, and the gate opens at sunrise. Lodges inside the park get through an hour earlier: the difference between first light in the vlei and first light in a queue.

06 · How long you need

5 hrs

roughly, from Windhoek or Swakopmund to Sossusvlei. Most of it gravel.

Never drive after dark. Give yourselves two nights wherever you marry, so there’s a backup morning.

For a road trip with a ceremony in it, ten days to two weeks feels unhurried.

two nights. trust me.

07 · 08 · ON THE DAY

P. 07

07 · What to wear

Dawn is cold. Midday is hot.

Bring a coat or blanket for the walk in and drop it before the ceremony. The walk into Deadvlei is about a kilometre of soft sand: carry your shoes or wear flat sandals. Light, flowing fabric looks beautiful in the wind; long trains and cathedral veils fight it. Ivory, champagne and earth tones sit well against red sand.

08 · Respecting the place

Leave it as we found it.

Deadvlei’s trees are centuries old. We don’t touch, climb or lean on them. No confetti, petals, sparklers or smoke bombs in the parks, and everything we bring in goes out with us. Drones need permits and are restricted in national parks, so ask me before you pack one.

09 · QUESTIONS COUPLES ASK

THE LOCAL’S GUIDE · 2027 SEASON

P. 08

Before you book.

Q.Where are you based, and do you travel?

A.I live in Walvis Bay and photograph all over Namibia, including multi-day trips to remote regions. Travel is quoted upfront.

Q.Is Namibia safe to elope in?

A.It’s one of the most stable, welcoming countries in southern Africa. The real risks are on the road: long gravel distances, tiredness and animals at night. So we never drive after dark.

Q.Can you recommend local suppliers?

A.Officiants, hair and make-up, florists: I’ll introduce you to people I’ve worked with and trust, and help you decide what a ceremony for two needs.

Q.Can you help plan the rest of our trip?

A.I’ll help you shape the route around your ceremony and introduce you to tour operators I trust for the bookings.

Q.What if the weather turns?

A.We build in a backup morning. Wind, fog and the odd storm are part of Namibia. With a spare day they become part of your story.

Q.How far ahead should we book?

A.For July to October, nine to twelve months. For the rest of the year, six months is usually enough.
