A Wild Spitzkoppe Elopement in Namibia

If there is a place in Namibia that feels made for an intimate elopement, it is Spitzkoppe.

A Scottish groom in a family kilt. A Norwegian bride who had fallen in love with Namibia. And a ceremony beneath the granite giants of Spitzkoppe as the desert sun slipped behind the mountains.

Spitzkoppe rises from the desert like a forgotten island of granite.
There are no church bells here.

No carefully arranged rows of chairs.
Just open skies, ancient rock formations and a silence that seems to stretch all the way to the horizon.

For Ben and Silje, that was exactly the point.

Travelling through Namibia, they chose to leave behind expectations and exchange vows beneath one of the country’s most iconic landscapes.

Just the two of them, surrounded by rock, light and the vastness that makes Namibia feel unlike anywhere else on earth.

They stayed at Spitzkoppen Lodge. I was camped inside the reserve with my family, scouting locations between rock climbs with my boys. By the afternoon of the 31st of October, I had a very good idea of exactly where I wanted to take them.

The afternoon light at Spitzkoppe doesn't linger. You have maybe twenty minutes of golden hour before the rocks go from warm to dark, and the arch requires a climb. We were cutting it close.

Ben left early without having a peek at Silje. Being Scottish, Ben was dressed in his family kilt, proudly wearing his kilt on a very hot but windy afternoon. After Ben left, Silje and I got chatting. Silje is from Norway, also an incredibly scenic country. But Namibia has stolen her heart with its often barren, wide-open landscapes.

Taking a shortcut through the reserve, we had ample time for photos. We even found a few zebras eager to pose for us. I was getting nervous as I saw the sun sliding behind the Matterhorn.

Photographers love talking about golden hour. Namibia has never paid much attention to those rules.

The light can spend an entire afternoon looking harsh and uncooperative before suddenly softening for a few fleeting moments. Then, just as quickly, it disappears behind the mountains and leaves everything bathed in shadow.

At Spitzkoppe, those few minutes arrived just as Ben and Silje stepped onto the rocks.

We arrived at the designated spot. The arch wasn’t quite ready yet, so Silje and I walked a bit to take a few more photos… and then Ben gave the sign…Spitzkoppe is one of the most beautiful settings imaginable to get married in.

The sermon was beautifully curated, and as the musician’s song voiced their love, I quietly got rid of my own tears…

Watching them stand together beneath Spitzkoppe, with nobody else demanding their attention and nowhere else they needed to be, it was difficult to imagine a more fitting way to begin a marriage.

I looked up at the sky and realised a mad dash for light was in order. Ben navigated us on the single tracks towards The Arch as quickly as he could. As we were a tad late, we made a serious run for it until we had only a steep climb between us and the arch.

Every run and scary climb was worth it… the scenes that played out were more than I ever could have hoped for.

The next morning

As time wasn’t really on our side, we decided to return to the scene the next morning for a few more photos. The location where we had the ceremony was dashed in bright light, but looking up, I saw the full moon sliding out of sight – and I knew – this was another great opportunity.

We then departed to another part of the reserve where we took a few more photos.

Ben and Silje dropped me off at our campsite, and we said our goodbyes.

For Ben and Silje, Spitzkoppe wasn’t simply a beautiful location for photographs. Like so many couples who choose to elope in Namibia, the landscape itself became part of the story.

Namibia is never just a backdrop. It shapes the experience, slows the pace and reminds you how small the rest of the world can feel.

Planning a Spitzkoppe elopement?

If the idea of exchanging vows beneath ancient granite peaks appeals to you more than a traditional venue, Spitzkoppe offers one of the most remarkable elopement locations in Namibia.

It is wild without being inaccessible. Remote without feeling isolated. And when the light begins to move across the rock faces at the end of the day, it becomes a place that is difficult to describe and impossible to forget.
