Welcome to Desert Homestead

It was a long day on the road. I left home just after 7 am and started driving south. Distance in Namibia is relative and when you are a photographer, you throw time out of the window. I made it in good time to Windhoek. It is a road that I have driven many times before. From there southwards, I still need to explore. And of course, I instantly drove slower. I had to check myself to not stop every five kilometres for a photo. Every turn delivered a more beautiful scene. And soon I was well behind schedule. What is more, the last bit of the gravel road really tested my driving abilities. Being peak season in Namibia, also means that the gravel roads are fairly corrugated. Some more than others.

Finally, just before sunset, I arrived at my location, Desert Homestead. A location that I have sold a hundred times to clients when I was still a travel agent. A location, that I now got to visit for the first time. This time as a photographer. Walking up to the reception, I drank in the location. Stark white buildings are etched against an otherwise natural palette. Somehow it worked. I checked in and headed for the shower. Almost time to meet my clients for their first photoshoot here at the lodge.

Eric and Myriam came to Namibia twelve years ago on their honeymoon. Two years ago, they wanted to return to Namibia for their ten-year anniversary – this time around with their two children. Covid hit and their holiday was postponed. And now, finally, after so much rescheduling and dreaming, it was time. They were back in Namibia at their favourite lodge and to celebrate, they even booked a photographer to capture their time here.

It was a fun shoot as the kids relaxed in front of the camera and just started enjoying the beautiful evening. We headed up to the dining area and enjoyed breathing views, gloriously red wine, and ridiculously good food. I said my good nights early – it was time to check in with the boys back home and to be totally honest – I could barely keep my curiosity in check – I just had to download those photos!
