I’m standing between the parents, waiting for the arrivals at the Matric Farewell.
Unlike them, I’m watching the incoming cars.
The parents, on the other hand, are letting it rip.
“My daughter spent six months finding this dress, and we only had twenty minutes before the wind destroyed her hair for photos.”
“The price of the dress alone doesn’t feel real. All that money, and then twenty minutes of rushing around while everyone worried about the time.”
“And then the car arrived late.”
“That’s nothing. Her heel broke.”
By the time the first matrics arrive, I’ve usually heard half a dozen versions of the same story.
Different families. Different schools.
Same day.
Same stress.
It’s one of the reasons more and more families along the Swakopmund and Walvis Bay coast are choosing to do their matric photos before the Farewell.
Not because the Farewell isn’t important.
But because nobody wants to remember the day feeling rushed.
Living on the coast teaches you one thing very quickly: the weather doesn’t care about your plans.
Sometimes the wind arrives at two in the afternoon and stays for the evening.

And most importantly — time for everyone to actually enjoy the experience.
Then the big day arrives.
Hair.
Make-up.
Phone photos.
Friends.
Excitement.
The last-minute chaos that somehow becomes part of every Farewell story.
But this time there is one thing missing: the pressure.
The matric photos are already done.
The memories are already safe.
Now the day gets to be what it was always meant to be — a celebration.
Something interesting happens when the schedule disappears.
People relax.
Personalities show up.
Dad gets a chance to twirl his daughter around and suddenly remembers the little girl who used to stand on his shoes while dancing in the kitchen.
Mom looks up at her son and catches a glimpse of the man he is becoming.
Grandparents sit a little longer.
Siblings laugh a little harder.
The photographs become about more than a dress, a suit, or a Farewell.
They become about a family standing on the edge of a new chapter.
There are very few occasions in life where everyone makes the effort to dress up, be present, and spend time together.

A standalone matric session (booked on a different day entirely) gives us time to work with the light, explore more than one location, and make room for the family shots that matter.
