Sunrise or Sunset? The Best Time for Deadvlei Photos

Why Sunrise Is the Best Time for Deadvlei Photos

Besides the obvious heat factor, the blue hues of sunrise, together with the crisp, clean morning air, create spectacular light and colour in Deadvlei.
As you drive into Sossusvlei with the sun rising behind you, the dunes never stop changing colour. It often makes me wonder: what is the original and true colour of these dunes?
The very fact that Deadvlei lies beneath one of the highest dunes in the valley ensures that the vlei remains in the shade for as long as possible.
This creates a fresher experience, but also beautiful contrast. Contrast between the trees and the stark white pan. Contrast between the dark blue tones of the long shadows and the crisp morning air.

Why Midday Light Does Not Work in Deadvlei

What people don’t tell you is that Namibia gets so hot that heat shimmer becomes a real problem from around 11 am. It can make photos appear soft or blurry, and there is very little you can do about it.
Unless you are aiming for that National Geographic look, with zebras walking across the pan while heat waves dance through the frame, midday is not the time for photos in Deadvlei.

Is Sunset a Good Option for a Deadvlei Session?

It’s not a bad option, but the heat will still be lingering in the pan after baking there all afternoon.
Those orange dunes absorb and hold heat far longer than you would think. While the light can be stunning and the skies often put on a spectacular show, the heat may still be a factor. It is also worth remembering that the orange tones in the sky amplify the colour of the dunes and reflect rather strongly onto lighter skin tones. My vote is still with the crisp blue morning light, before the sun turns me into a raisin and my camera into a frying pan.

What Time Should You Enter the Park?

As soon as possible after the gates open. The gates open at sunrise, and depending on the season, that can be either pleasantly early or pure madness.
Gate times will be available from your lodge reception.
Of course, if you stay inside the park at Sossus Dune Lodge or Dead Valley Lodge, you have a considerable advantage.
Kulala Desert Lodge and Little Kulala also offer earlier access than lodges situated outside the park gates.

Planning a Couple or Family Session in Deadvlei

When planning a couple or family session in Deadvlei, there are a few things worth considering.
While the gates open at the crack of dawn, the gate is approximately 60 km from the main parking area.
The speed limit inside the park is 60 km/h, so you can easily add an hour of driving time.
From the parking area, it is another 5 km of 4x4 driving to the Deadvlei parking area. You can either drive yourself or make use of the shuttle service. The trip takes about 10 minutes.
From there, you still need to walk roughly 2 km to reach Deadvlei.
The first stretch is over firm ground, while the last kilometre is, well, a slightly uphill dune climb. Depending on your level of fitness, this can be a brisk 20-minute walk or a gentle reminder that it may be time to visit the gym.

What Should You Wear for a Deadvlei Photo Session?

The other constant factor is the desert temperature. Early mornings can be surprisingly cool, but remember that you will warm up during the walk to Deadvlei, and it will be considerably hotter on the return journey.

There is no need to weigh yourself down with jackets that could have stayed in the car.

A single long-sleeve shirt for sun protection and a light down jacket will usually be more than enough if you want to stay warm.
I generally wear a long-sleeve shirt that provides both warmth and sun protection, along with a scarf for that extra layer when needed.

And water. Water. Water.

Carry more than you think you’ll need.

Will Children Manage the Walk to Deadvlei?

Will they struggle in the heat? Will they manage the walk?
Children can handle far more than we often give them credit for.
The secret is snacks, regular water breaks, and something to flavour the water when energy levels start dipping.
Most importantly, allow them to rest and enjoy the experience.
If they are expected to perform, keep up with the adults, and be “on” the entire time, they won’t enjoy the moment. They need time to feel the dune sand between their fingers and their toes.
Time to explore.
Time to simply be there.
And don’t dress them too warmly. They move far more than adults and heat up much faster. Overdressing can quickly become a source of frustration and a lot of unnecessary weight to carry.

My Recommendation

Deadvlei is beautiful throughout the day, but there is a short window when the light is soft, the colours are at their richest, and the desert has not yet begun to flex its muscles.
That is the window I will choose every time.

If you’re planning a couple, family, honeymoon, or elopement session in Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, I’d love to help you make the most of it.

What is the best time for photos in Deadvlei?

Sunrise is generally the best time for photos in Deadvlei. The temperatures are cooler, the air is clearer, and the soft light creates beautiful contrast between the white clay pan, the trees, and the surrounding dunes.

Both can be beautiful, but sunrise usually offers cooler temperatures, cleaner light, and less heat shimmer, making it the better option for most photo sessions.

From the park entrance, allow approximately one hour to drive to the main parking area, plus a 5 km 4x4 section and a 2 km walk to reach Deadvlei itself.

Yes. Most children manage the walk well when given enough water, snacks, and opportunities to rest and explore along the way.
